Treo 755 (Verizon) is one of the most beautiful voice and sound quality I’ve ever had a mobile phone. Since 1992, I used 3 Motorola, 1 Kyocera, Samsung, Nokia and 1 HTC phones. Two of them were based on Windows Mobile and really bad. Windows Mobile phones freeze all the time and while many bells and whistles, most functions do not work half the time. Palm is much more intuitive to use and is stable, but not without problems.

I have not been able to sync Outlook calendar with my Treo. Keyboard on the Treo 755p is cramped, but you get used to it in a few days and begins to give birth. The body is well shaped, fits perfectly in your hand and you can use most functions, including the keyboard, with one hand. Browser is bare minimum – you can not Youtube videos you can see on the iPhone! Touchscreen is quick and responsive. Most applications are simple, unadorned but functional aka Google style.

My other major requirement of a smartphone has the ability to run Microsoft Office documents, spreadsheets, databases that I can be much better in the Palm Treo to use than I could in Windows Pocket PC phones. They are used to lock-up. Two medical software I use, and update Epocrates works much better than 755p Treo phones Windows Pocket PC.

My son has the iPhone and I used to seriously consider before buying Treo 755p. Undeniably, the iPhone has the best user interface is the best multimedia device is beautifully designed mobile browser, but is not a reliable phone. AT & T and the signal coverage is not as good as Verizon, the sound quality on the iPhone is not great, the speed of data is not 3G, the iPhone can not be used as a cellular modem (without hacking), and not many other software available for Palm. Keyboard with hard, it’s better in the palm. Later in 2008, they are supposed to come with 3G and the iPhone may be that some of these failures to adopt – but not the network AT & T.

I was able to use Treo 755p as a cellular modem with my laptop and speed have been around 800-900 kbps. Overall I am satisfied with the Treo 755p and find the best choice among PDA phones – at least on Verizon and Sprint.

Many people complain of Treo not multitask. But how can you face many challenges in the device with such a small screen? Windows Mobile is multitasking and so unstable. Palm is a proven platform reliability. Who knows what the other Linux-based Palm OS will look like? They have tried their hands on Windows Mobile and the result is an unstable Windows Mobile device. More from third-party applications installed, the slower the phone responds.

Therefore, my views on smartphones and PDA phones :

1. Windows Mobile devices are terrible and unusable most of the time.
2. Blackberries are primarily email devices with less PIM functionality in some 3rd party software.
3. Symbian base as the Nokia N95 are not as widely available on U.S. carriers and neither subsidized by them and not much 3rd party software available. My experience with the Nokia N95 is used and I was not impressed.
4. iPhone is a great music and video player and has the best mobile browser but a below average phone. If you have an iPod with a large (but slow) web browser and the phone is secondary to you, go for the iPhone.
4. If you have a reliable phone with decent PDA functionality, Palm devices are the way forward. Centro is compact and pocket size, ideal PDA phone, but is not available on Verizon now. Until then, Treo 755p squat is probably a good choice.
