Reviews HTC Touch HD2: My first HTC, and probably the last time!
For a Sony Ericsson fan-boy ‘but I do not think I would ever defect to another manufacturer. However, if my roommate has the HD2, although I had little chance to check it, I fell in love. The HD2 is my first HTC. But certainly not my first contact or Windows Mobile device, as I already own the Sony Ericsson X1, touch interface and several other functions.

Now, as with any device, there will always be negative points. So I want to get away, so I can concentrate on the strengths that this is a great device.
The HD2 is powered by Windows Mobile 6.5, which is the latest version currently available. Like Windows, it comes with its proper share of flaws, but it can not be blamed only on Windows, because often there are problems with some smartphones and Pocket PC!
You get the occasional error, the program crashed here and there. But it is very irregular. I had the unit for a few months now, and I have done 2 or 3 times. An average of about once a month is not bad given how much I used.
There are also some problems similar to the work of HTC, in contrast to Windows. Things like the new text messages do not always indicate whether you already, and the use of the e-mail application. Sometimes a text message to be stuck in the Outbox, and the only way to have sent to reboot the machine!
I also had problems with the alarm goes off (which is a patch for the HTC announced next week), and the handset is turned off several times. You can rest assured knowing that I seem to be the only person with this problem, and I think I may have a faulty handset!
The only other question I have is that the keyboard a bit too sensitive. In normal use, it is actually very accurate. However, when it comes to SMS, this can sometimes lead to errors. Fortunately, there is a tweak that is very easy to do, making it a little less sensitive and more accurate.
That’s about what the main issues. Thus, only most of the good points!
The phone itself is quite large. And it is. It has a 4.3 inch screen, which most of the aircraft shall, with only a small row of buttons below. But it fits perfectly in your hand, and after a while, you quickly get used to the size. Well, it does not let you watch other handsets with small screens, and I was wondering how the hell you did! The screen is apparently scratch resistant. There are videos online of people demonstrating this by scraping a knife on the screen, and show no scratches. I would not be so stupid to try, but it shows how strong. Well, I would not fall, except that the glass screen will be history!
Onboard is all the technology you would expect, like Bluetooth, WiFi and aGPS.
The screen, despite their large size, is colorful and clear. As I said before, the screen is sensitive. It’s great for viewing photos, watching videos, surfing the web. It can handle all this.
Being a Windows Mobile, there are obviously many menus. The client is the startup menu, which branches on most installed programs and functions of the phone. Despite the large number of them are easy to navigate, well exposed and can be organized to some extent. With the help of additional software it is also possible to change the icons quite easily.
The Today screen is where everything happens. This very screen before you are presented when you open your device. For those of you who have used Windows Mobile, the Today screen is quite “boring” compared to the HD2. Because he has a program called HTC Sense. An important part of the screen is occupied by a nice big clock and a small application that shows the weather forecast for your current location or a desired city. Below is a room for your alarm and calendar entries so that they can be displayed on the main page.
Also below are three quick links. This lets you program shortcuts, contacts or bookmarks that you use regularly. Swipe screen up, and you are presented with six other quick links that can also be adjusted.
No matter if you agree to see all nine quick links, or only three, and the clock, there is always a bar along the bottom of the screen. Although this can not be configured to contain shortcuts to programs or contacts, allows you quick access to your e-mail, Internet messages, contacts and other programs.
The phone comes with a number of construction applications. These include a Facebook application. HTC Peep, a Twitter application. I personally do not use Twitter, but from what I saw of the application, people find it very helpful. Footprints is also included. Lets you take a photo of a landmark, participating in a voice recording, text, and GPS coordinates. It’s like making an album only on your phone, and is a great idea! HTC also their stock and weather applications. I do not personally apply to the stock, and I find the time, while visually very pleasant, is often inaccurate. The phone comes with a very good execution YouTube.
In addition there are many Microsoft applications as well. Market, which you can download applications and games for your mobile, Microsoft Office (including Word, Excel Outlook, PowerPoint, etc.), and Windows Live Messenger.
Call quality is not too bad. I’ve heard better, and I’ve heard worse. It may be a little bit first “metal”, but there is a patch for HTC only seconds to install, and dramatically improves call quality.
The battery life, as might be expected, is not as good as some other phones. Indeed, it has many functions and a large screen to power. Despite this, I use my phone for calls, texts and internet use a number of (usually let my internet connection) and the battery usually takes a few days before I need to load. Of course, if you connect to your PC while using it charged.
The HD2 features a 5 MP camera, this is nothing revolutionary in this period, but the camera is of good quality and has a number of options to adjust the images. He also recorded in VGA at 30 fps, which generates good results.
Video playback but with videos recorded on camera, and those who have switched from a PC or downloaded are smooth.
The phone has an application for viewing photos in a very nice, so you slide on the screen. Unfortunately, this request does not show pictures that you have marked as favorites. If you are someone like me who are hundreds or even thousands of photos on your phone, it’s not really practical to use. You can use the photo gallery of Windows Mobile, or the file manager, but they are a bit complicated to navigate.
Web browsing is very good. You can choose between Opera, or Internet Explorer. Each has its own advantage, even if the whole I recommend the Opera. You can navigate through multiple tabs, and so “to pinch” zoom is available.
The sound quality in terms of sound quality is not great through the speakers. But again, unless you’re one of those teenagers a bit annoying that playing loud music on the bus or walking in the street, it is unlikely that you have too much problem. Reading through the headphones is much better, and only further enhanced by the use of the Service Building Audio Booster.
The on-board memory is very limited, and you can expand with a memory card. Currently, as far as I know, this can be extended to 32 GB, but that is certainly more than enough for most people!
Windows Mobile Device Center is available for Windows XP, and comes with Windows Vista as standard. Allows you to synchronize your device with Windows. You can also choose to synchronize some things, such as calendar and contacts, with programs like Outlook. Like most devices, it is possible while charging the handset is connected, and connect as mass storage.
A handy program that is installed MicrosoftMyPhone. This lets your contacts, files, text messages, etc. to store in your Windows Live Space. This means that if you lose your phone, you do not lose all the information you have stored.
You can also use Microsoft Marketplace, which many applications for the phone. All these are free, but a good amount of them. There are also many websites that offer free software and applications to offer.
HTC really went to work at the interface more attractive. simple effects, such as e-mail display mode on sheets of paper, which allows you to browse through. Text messages so twist on the screen.
If you have a Hotmail account, you can phone to e-mails when they arrive – in essence receive push email.
This device, despite its flaws, is brilliant. It has almost everything you want, and if it is not – chances are that you can download. And it certainly had enough kit to stay on board over the competition for a while!
