Reviews Samsung SCH-U310 Knack Phone, Black (Verizon Wireless): ideal for low vision or hearing. No frills
This phone will never be stolen or used by a person under 21 (or 50). It is the safest kewl device in existence. An iPhone is not! For vision or hearing impairment or those who do not need or want the latest gadget, this phone is for you. Since the phone is relatively low, there are far fewer menus. Most menu options to disable or sounds. Example option, the sounds of each individual button (“four”, “six”). Allowing each option will be his companion very talkative.

Advantages
The letters are large. Very, very big. And you can use the fonts in some menus even greater.
No camera. No games. No music. No photos.
The text is still black and in some regions, the background is bright white and to provide a very high contrast large text. With my 20/20 vision I can read the text literally from all corners of the bedroom. I’m not kidding.
He has speed dial, but the options game is not as described in the manual. I found the speed dialing option on another menu.
The keys light up very bright and clear.
The buttons are tactile Nice.
Superb battery conservation. If you do not use the phone much, you can probably go a week or two before having to recharge.
The maximum noise is strong – very strong. A person may hear voices coming from the other side of the room on the highest setting. Maybe you want the sound of a few phone calls to reduce.
I use the calendar, but it can be improved. I also use the alarm clock, stopwatch and calculator. The calendar, alarm clock and calculator are dedicated buttons.
Disadvantages:
Why, oh, why not create a white screen?
This phone is clearly designed for the visually impaired or no-nonsense type of person, so why should it not a white or neutral background, the main menu? What were they thinking? There is no way to import a white background, because no camera and no option to change the wallpaper.
Small (small?) Button “OK”.
Small external screen. -No external caller ID display. No date on the external screen.
The police have been (should be) higher in the main menu, but no, she had a cute background.
No Bluetooth. One drawback if you want / need a wireless headset.
Some circles have different colors. No option for change. Decrease the color contrast and readability.
The speech was positively terrible slowwwww. It drives me to tears. My phone is 10 + years ago, a much better job of name recognition. And you have the screen copyright moron every time to see. When I wrote the software, I would hide, not show, the display of copyright. It is shameful.
The speech voice prompt played if the speaker, which can be quite annoying in some situations. I have not found an option for this “feature. Again, what were they thinking or are they just stupid?
There is no vibrate before ring options. I want to be able to answer the phone rings before the ring does not disturb others. The vibration function is quite low. [Updated February 28 May 2009: I have a voting option in which a female voice said quietly found "You have an incoming call" before the phone rings. Several times, I am able to answer the phone rings before. I adore this feature.]
The convention “in the calendar is a bit lame. There is no way to notify you of an appointment to come. What I do is the appointment of several hours ahead and type in real time in the text field.
I do not understand why they are so small and hard power. On the cord, there is a dark red arrow on a black background. Why not white? And the cover is dark and thin. Good luck if you reduced vision or poor finger coordination. Another insult to people with disabilities. In some comments, the colors of the protective doors, cleared so they appear to be clearly visible. These commentators are misleading.
In short, this simple phone with 80% needs of those who are mildly disabled and 95% who just want a simple phone. If you have a parent who needs a simple phone or outside or a technophobe, you can set up for them and will gladly independent (except for charging).
The ringtone volume is quite low on our two phones, although the ring volume set to maximum. If the phone in a bag or jacket, you might not be able to your phone when it rings to find. I think this will be a big detractor. We lack a lot of calls for this reason. I carry my phone in my pocket. I can not hear my phone ring when I’m in a store. We do not have a phone in a holster and we’re not about to start. When others ring cell phone, they are so difficult, I jump. Mine sound in a theater and I do not think anyone notice.
[Update January 24, 2010] I heard that the charging cradle is available which will remove the plugin loading problem. With Verizon, the default number of rings 3. You can call Verizon and increase the number of cycles to 8. This can be made from this phone. Please note that some rings have been swallowed up before the phone rings, do not expect that the phone is ringing a full eight times.
